This year I’m going to eat better and exercise more… sound familiar? These aspirations are the most common new year’s resolutions people make. I’ve got a different one for you! How about, I’m going to stress less?
We have become so consumed with how healthy we are physically, but our mental health is just as important yet isn’t given the same level of attention.
Stress and anxiety affect more than a third of Australians. At some point we will all feel some level of stress. But if you find these stressful vibes creeping in a little too often, take a look at some of my tips below.
- Learn to say “No”: We need to accept that sometimes we just can’t do everything, and sometimes we need to put ourselves and our needs before others. It isn’t selfish to do so. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure you fill yourself and your needs first.
- Be grateful – No matter how bad things can seem, there is ALWAYS something to be grateful for. When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, think of things you are grateful for. Things like, being grateful for waking up today and being alive. Or being grateful for a particular person or experiences. It shifts your mindset and you will instantly feel more calm, more empowered, and less stressed.
- Get some extra zzzz – easier said than done sometimes, but sleep is so important. When you’re sleep deprived, all the things that stress us are amplified. Especially if you have a baby or child who wakes throughout the night. Do whatever you can to get adequate sleep. Try to get to bed earlier.
- Focus on What you Can Control: – No point pouring stressful energy into something that you don’t have the power to change. But you can choose how you react and respond to a situation. Choose to welcome the challenge and find a positive opportunity within it. It’s so easy to become swept up in and stressed about things you have no control over.
- Breathe: – So often we forget about this magical tool we have. So simple, yet so powerful. Deep, long, loud breaths instantly calm your mind and body. And you can do this anywhere. When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, just breathe. Inhale love, exhale negative and stressful thoughts. Let it go.
I find these strategies to be effective ways to reduce stress, and I hope they help you too. Drop me a line and let me know your thoughts.
Happy Calm
